Effective, science-based programming
for lifelong clients.
THE AFTC CERTIFICATION
The proactive, individualized approach to personal training.
The Applied Functional Training Certification (AFTC) builds efficient, science-based programming that maximize results while reducing the risk of injury. We take a people-first approach to functional training, understanding how to manipulate any program based on the experience, limitations, injuries, or goals of the individual athlete. The result? Personal training shifts from a reactive to a proactive mindset—anticipating potential obstacles and outcomes of every client session.
THE PROCESS
Our formula for building an efficient, functional training program.
1
Conduct a movement assessment
An expert program is built on science (anatomy) and people (the individual client). You learn how to recognize movement patterns, tailoring each program to the individual client.
2
Bridge your goals with client goals
As a coach, you have a responsibility to blend what the client wants (their goals) with what the client needs (your goals). Translation: The client progresses while increasing longevity and knowledge of the human body.
3
Dissect every exercise
The most efficient programs take a proactive approach. Understanding that even the most trusted exercises can be detrimental to some clients, you recognize and anticipate limitations, then manipulate workouts accordingly.
4
Implement your program
Our formula can be manipulated for any scenario—from one-on-one to group sessions, and beginner to advanced athletes. Your final exam? Presenting your complete program, sparking discussion amongst your class.

TRADITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS
Why other certifications fall short
X Self-study or online learning
X Preaches that exercises are strictly “good or bad”
X Preaches that to be a good trainer, you must have a solid grasp of anatomy
X Takes a reactive approach to training (“Now this person has an ankle injury, so now I’ll program…”).
X Not goal oriented
X Views exercises as isolated movements
X Prescribes generic workouts
